Publishing Services
from Valley Press
What we offer
With 15 years’ experience and over 250 completed projects on the shelf, we feel confident that whatever your publishing goals, we can help you achieve them.
On this page, you can browse through the key publishing services provided to authors and organisations by Valley Press. Where a price range is given, costs vary depending on the length and complexity of the manuscript.
If you are considering hiring us, the next step is to get in touch and let us know more about the book you are working on, and what your goals and priorities are for the project. We’ll be happy to put together a bespoke estimate of costs based on your individual needs.
Please note: These services are aimed at independent authors (or organisations) who wish to remain in control of the editorial and design aspects of their book, as well as all rights to the work and the majority of income from sales.
For information on “traditional” publishing opportunities at Valley Press, where the above does not apply, please visit our submissions page.
Consultancy
£60 per half hour
A conversation with Valley Press Publisher Jamie McGarry about your project and your publishing goals, usually conducted over the phone or via a video chat.
Jamie can advise on the best strategy based on your priorities, budget – both financial and time-wise – and level of computer literacy, whether that involves self-publishing, submitting to agents, working with publishers, or some combination of the above.
Manuscript feedback
from £300
An expert in the genre will carefully read your book and write a detailed report, with notes on the writing, structure, narrative, character, plot, audience, design and marketing, as appropriate. (The focus of the report can be refined or expanded at the author’s request.)
For collections of poetry, short stories or essays, feedback can be provided on the selection and ordering of the individual pieces where required.
Copyediting
from £300
Line-by-line editing of your manuscript, covering practical aspects such as typos, spelling errors and grammar as well as stylistic concerns such as repetition, consistency, clarity and flow.
Edits are made using the “track changes” functionality of your word processing software for easy review, acceptance and rejection of our suggestions.
(Additional proofreading by a qualified third party, focusing purely on the practical aspects, can also be provided for a true “belt and braces” approach.)
Typesetting
from £300
World-class interior design for your book, giving readers the best possible experience – focusing on the flow of the text as well as the spacing, margins, fonts and other design features.
Using industry-standard software and processes, we ensure that the resulting PDF files are ISO-compliant and suitable for use with any printing outlet.
Samples of our typesetting work in multiple genres can be provided on request.
Cover design
£500-£800
A world-class cover design to suit your creative vision. Prices vary as follows:
£500 – the client provides a high-quality main image to work with
£600 – we source a variety of suitable images to choose from
£700 – significant design work or image editing is requested
£800 – an original illustration is requested
Print management
£60 per half hour
Whatever kind of book you want to produce, our in-depth knowledge of the UK print market and existing relationships will help us source the best materials and prices currently available. A half-hour of research is usually sufficient to produce estimates for a variety of specifications.
We will also be delighted to act as “go-between”, managing the entire printing process to ensure your goals are met.
We can also advise on print-on-demand setup and national/international distribution where required.
Ebook production
60p per page
The process of converting your book from its current file format into the universally-accepted EPUB format, for distribution via any ebook platform you can think of (including Amazon Kindle).
We work with experts in this field to ensure a reliable and attractive product, with all the features you’d expect and some you might not – like our favourite innovation, a “dynamic hanging indent” for the clear presentation of poetry in a reflowable digital format.
