Charm is a debut collection that explores the spaces and edges between places and people – and the ways we find comfort in an unpredictable world. That solace is often discovered in the natural and the ordinary: a stone from the beach, a handful of sweet chestnuts, some walnuts from the market.
Drawn from the landscapes of Scotland, Switzerland, Austria and Germany, these poems also conjure means of escape through journeying, shapeshifting, mythology and spell. Geese, foxes, crows, old masters and ancient paths become Green’s conspirators in these forays into the imaginary.
At its heart, the book seeks to understand the relationship between past and present, especially the inheritance of trauma: coordinates, stones and trees anchor drifting memories, fears and hopes. Multilingual echoes reflect Green’s exploration of language and belonging, of how words themselves can take root. Living between countries and cultures, she writes with a profound sense of cianalas, a yearning for home – which the poems themselves strive to answer.
