There You Are is a restless, sea-worn collection that follows the pull of leaving and the ache of return. From Irish quays and Hebridean sands to Orkney cairns, Welsh chapels and Greek islands, these poems move through myth, ritual and lived history, finding holiness in the ordinary and the endangered.

The author directs his gaze unflinchingly at climate’s rising tide, at wartime grief from Theresienstadt to Kyiv, and at the long shadow of the Titanic; seeking answers in jazz, folklore and the I Ching. It closes with ‘Arcana’, a ten-part love sequence cast from the Tarot’s major cards – a devastating, witty and intimate statement, from a poet at the very height of their powers.

Praise for There You Are:

“Clear your diary for the weekend – it’s time to hunker down for some serious reading. And don’t worry about stocking up your fridge; there’s eating and drinking in There You Are, an expansive, time-travelling collection that roves through history and mythology. With a masterful control of syntax, Lodge offers us a veritable banquet of images and landscapes to delight our inquisitive minds, touching down in places as far-flung as Wales (anyone for a Welsh cake?), Ancient Greece and Mesolithic Doggerland. A deep-dive, exhilarating read.”
— Anne Tannam

“Doused in myth, magic, lyric, and history from the first line (‘always I am the emigrant at sea fathomless’), Patrick Lodge’s There You Are traverses with a passionate search for connection across time, land, and sea. Epic and tidal sequences swell with profound humanity taking us to the Outer Hebrides to the Greek isles and landing where perhaps all poetry should: with Tarot-inspired love sonnets. If you are seeking a hero’s journey in verse, look no further than here with Lodge’s deftly sonorous collection.”
— Sandra Yannone

‘All I know is, nothing lasts for long’ – it is this urgency in the face of the transitoriness of human existence that informs so many of these extraordinary poems. Lodge is a lyric poet of great depth, subtlety, and sensitivity, possessed of a natural facility for the intricacies of verse-making which is never overt or obvious, but which informs his poems with an underlying sense of harmony. He is a visionary, a mystic, and an unflinching witness to the pains, celebrations, and complexities of the past.”
— Ian Parks
